Here's your last WordMaster of the week! We've certainly enjoyed talking soccer with you these past few days, and we're looking forward to starting it all over again on Monday!
- When the second regular period ends and time lost - including time used for substitutions, injuries, etc. - has been played, if the teams are still tied, a winner can be decided in two ways:
The teams can play overtime periods, which are periods of normal play, typically 15 minutes each. Overtime is often called "extra time";
And/or there is a penalty (kick) shootout, in which five players from each team take a shot on goal from the penalty mark (11 meters from the center of the goal).
- In games played with the "golden goal" rule, when the score is tied at the end of the second half, the first team to score a goal in overtime wins.
- If the teams are still tied at the end of two 15-minute overtime periods, this game will be decided by a penalty kick shootout.
- Spain scored on 3 of its 5 attempts in the penalty shootout to beat Ireland.
We'll be watching with you!
