Hello and welcome back to WordMaster! It's November and the days are getting colder. Have you caught your first cold of the season yet? We've certainly seen a lot of people sneezing and coughing, so take care of yourself.

Health and illness are the themes for this week, so let's begin with the basics.

Explanation

  • You are healthy if there is nothing especially wrong with your body and you do not get sick easily. Something, such as food or an activity, is healthy if it helps keep you healthy.

To be well means that at this PARTICULAR time you are not sick and basically feel good.
  • healthy は、体に悪いところがない状態や病気になりにくい状態、つまり、健康なという意味です。体を健康に保つ食べ物や活動も healthy と言えます。

    well は、ある一時点で、病気ではなく元気である、という意味です。

examples

  1. I try to stay healthy by eating well and getting lots of exercise.
  2. I'm so lucky to have a loving husband and three healthy children.
  3. I'd rather eat healthy food that just tastes okay than delicious food that's bad for me.
  4. I haven't been well lately. Every day I wake up tired and with a headache.
  5. a: How are your parents?
b: They're both well, thank you.
  6. I was sorry to hear your father isn't well.

Stay well!
