Welcome back from another long weekend! We don't know about you, but we're starting to get used to these three-day weekends. Maybe there should be a law making every weekend three days long!

It's a Mixed Bag this week. You may not know what to expect, but you can be sure it'll be worth your time and attention. Have fun!

Today's LessonCATEGORY: Japanese English
EARRINGS   耳飾り

Explanation

  • Earrings are jewelry that you wear on your ears.

Pierced earrings are earrings that you attach to your ear through a small hole in the ear. Clip-on earrings can be attached without making a hole in the ear.

    Be careful:
We do NOT use the word "pierce" like the Japanese ピアス to mean pierced earrings.

examples

  1. The nicest gift I've ever gotten from my boyfriend was a pair of 10-karat gold earrings.
  2. MAN: Do you like it when men wear earrings?
WOMAN: It really depends on the man. Some guys look really cool with an earring.
  3. Don't you think Amy's still too young for pierced earrings?  Why don't you just buy her a pretty pair of clip-ons?
  4. One problem with clip-on earrings is that they can slip off easily and so are easily lost.

Bye bye!
