Good morning and a happy Monday to you! Today's WordMaster@Work topic is a little advanced, and we'd like to begin with a question for you.

Is your car worth as much now as when you bought it? Why not?

Today's Lesson
DEPRECIATION (n.), DEPRECIATE (v.)   価値の低下(名詞)、 価値が下がる(動詞)

Explanation

  • Depreciation is what happens when things like cars, houses, electronic goods and machines lose part of their value because of age, or use, or even changes in fashion.
  • depreciation  は、車、家、電化製品、機械などの物の価値が、年数がたった、使用した、はやらなくなった、などの理由で下がることです。

examples

  1. Because of depreciation my car has lost nearly half its value.
  2. If you had taken better care of your car, its value wouldn't have depreciated so dramatically.
  3. I didn't expect my computer to depreciate in value so rapidly.
  4. Some things, like popular paintings or antiques, never depreciate. They simply continue to grow in value.

Can you think of anything else that's not subject to  depreciation?
