If you're going to break the rules, you're going to have to pay a price once in a while, right?
Hmmm ... WordMaster waxing philosophical ...
(PARKING) TICKET (駐車)違反切符、違反切符を切る
- A ticket is a printed notice that you have to pay a fine for breaking a traffic law.
To ticket someone is to write them a ticket as punishment for breaking a traffic law. - ticket は、交通法規を破ったため罰金を支払うようにという内容が書かれた通告書のことで、 一般的に違反切符と呼ばれるものです。
動詞の ticket は、交通違反の通告書を書く、つまり、違反切符を切る、という意味です。
- a: Have you ever gotten a speeding ticket?
b: Just once, when I was in college. I was doing 130 (= driving 130 km/hr) on the highway to impress my girlfriend. - (after being stopped on the highway)
DRIVER: What's the problem, Officer?
POLICEMAN: Do you realize you were doing 65 in a 40 km/hr zone? I'm afraid I'll have to write you a ticket. - I was in a hurry, so I parked on the street. I was only in the store for 5 minutes, but when I came out, I found a parking ticket on the windshield!
- The police are ticketing cars parked on the street. You'd better move yours.
- (getting home)
WIFE: What's the matter?
HUSBAND: I was ticketed again.
WIFE: What did you do this time?
HUSBAND: I was driving the wrong way on a one-way street.
Keep smiling!
