For Life
2004.12.13

Just a couple of weeks now, but we're still not ready to talk about Christmas! Nope, this week's WordMasters have once again been inspired by the sport of skiing, except this time we look at the dark side - pain and injury due to falls and collisions on the slopes. At the same time, we'll be looking at the countless other ways we can hurt ourselves despite our best intentions. We recommend you take out the first aid kit and keep it next to the computer this week. You may need it!

Today's Lesson
BLISTER   水ぶくれ、まめ

Explanation

  • If you burn yourself or if something rubs against your skin for a period of time, that part of your skin may become red, begin to hurt, and fill with liquid, causing the skin to rise like a small bubble. This area is called a blister.

examples

  1. a: These ski boots are giving me blisters.
b: Mine too. This always happens on my first ski trip of the season.
  2. We hiked all day and came back with painful blisters on our feet.
  3. A bad sunburn can cause severe pain and blisters.
  4. You shouldn't pop blisters. They can become infected (= bacteria can get inside and cause disease).
