Explanation

  • A celebrity is a famous or well-known person, especially someone in show business.

    A TV personality is someone who becomes a celebrity because they often appear on TV. They are usually interesting, funny, unique, or just likeable, and appear on variety shows, talk shows, etc.

    Be careful! We do NOT use the word “talent” like the Japanese タレント to mean TV personality.
  • celebrity は、有名人のことで、特に芸能界の人をさしていう場合が多いです。

    TV personality は、よくテレビに出ることで知られている人です。たいてい話がおもしろいとか、おかしい、ユニーク、または何か魅力があって、バラエティ番組やトーク番組などに登場します。

    注意:英語の talent という言葉は、日本語の「タレント」のように TV personality の意味では使われません。

  1. You can always see lots of international celebrities at the Cannes Film Festival.
  2. TV talk shows invite celebrity guests to come and talk about their work, lifestyle, and relationships.
  3. My mother collects celebrity autographs. So far she has 18 movie actors, 7 pop singers, and quite a few TV personalities.
  4. A few foreigners who speak Japanese well and who can be funny in the language have become popular TV personalities.
  5. On one popular variety show, TV personalities try to guess the answers to questions about people and places around the world.
