Okay, unless you're one of the lucky ones who are able to make a living doing what they love best, your salary is perhaps the primary reason why you come to the office. But it's easy to forget about two other important reasons - even though they're sometimes worth nearly as much as half of a person's salary!
- A benefit is something of value given to an employee in addition to his salary. Benefits are usually written in the employment contract and include things such as: paid vacation, holidays, and sick days; health and life insurance; retirement and pension plans; performance bonuses and profit sharing.
A perk is a less formal benefit that is usually not mentioned in the employment contract. Some examples of common perks are: cell phones, personal digital assistants, free or discounted sports and theater tickets, and use of company fitness or recreational facilities.
- benefit は、従業員が会社から受ける、給与以外のサービスやお金のことです。benefit は、通常雇用契約に記載されていて、例えば有給休暇、会社が定めた休日、病気休暇、健康保険や生命保険、退職後の年金制度、業績手当てや利益分配制度などがあります。
perk は、雇用契約に記載されるほど正式なものではない benefit です。一般的な例としては、携帯電話や電子手帳、スポーツや芝居の招待券や割引券、社員が使えるスポーツクラブや保養所などが挙げられます。

a: What benefits does this company offer?
b: Well, to start with, we have a very attractive pension plan.
- I've often thought of leaving the company to try something new, but I don't want to give up my benefits.
- (at a baseball game)
a: How do you always get such great seats?
b: My company arranges it for me. It's just one of the perks of the job.
- Expensive perks, like company limousines and generous expense accounts, have become less common these days.
