Hello!
Over the centuries, humankind has created some very elegant tools for transferring words to paper. Here are just a few of them!
PEN / BALLPOINT PEN / FELT-TIP PEN /(MAGIC) MARKER
ペン ／ ボールペン ／ フェルトペン ／ マジック
- A pen is a writing instrument that puts ink onto paper.
A ballpoint pen is a pen with a small ball at the end.
A felt-tip pen is a pen with a piece of wool or similar material at the end.
A marker or magic marker is a thick pen used for drawing, writing on a whiteboard, etc.
Be Careful! In the United States, we do NOT usually use the expressions “ball pen”「ボールペン」, “felt pen” 「フェルトペン」, or “magic” 「マジック」 to mean ballpoint pen, felt-tip pen, or marker. - pen は、日本語のペンと同じ意味です。
ボールペンのことは、ballpoint pen と言います。
フェルトペンは、felt-tip pen と言います。
マジックのことは、marker または magic marker と言います。
注意：アメリカでは、一般的には、ボールペンのことを ball pen、 フェルトペンのことを felt pen、マジックのことを magic とは言いません。それぞれ、ballpoint pen、felt-tip pen、marker が正しい表現です。
- Can I borrow a pen?
- You'd better use a ballpoint pen for that form. If you use a felt-tip pen, they won't be able to read the carbon copy.
- I wish our school still had chalkboards instead of whiteboards. I much prefer using chalk to markers.
- I gave my little girl a set of ten magic markers in different colors for her birthday.
