リードする / 負けに転ずる
- To take the lead is to become ahead in a competition.
To fall behind is to become behind (= not ahead) or become further behind than before. - take the lead は、競技で勝っている状態になる、つまり、リードする、という意味です。
fall behind は、負けている状態になる、または、負けている状態がもっと悪くなる、という意味です。
- a: What's the score?
b: We just took the lead. We're ahead now 4 to 3. - After a scoreless (= neither team scored) first half, our team scored two quick goals early in the second half to take the lead.
- (reporting on a fictional baseball game)
The Berlitz Bengals took the lead in the bottom of the seventh (= 7th inning) with a two-run triple by Maximilian. - I fell behind early in the race and was never able to catch up.
- By the end of the first period, the team had fallen behind by 12 points.
