Greetings and felicitations! It's great to be starting another week with you!

It goes without saying that the WordMaster@Work team has great respect for the power of words. So let's spend a few days looking at various approaches to using this power. We begin by setting the tone for the week with the following useful expression!

Today's LessonCATEGORY:
SET THE TONE   ~

Explanation

  • Something or someone can set the tone if they create a particular mood that continues for a period of time, such as throughout an activity.

We also use the pattern “set a + ADJECTIVE + tone” to describe the specific kind of mood that is created.

  2. My son Michael got sick on the day we arrived, and unfortunately that set the tone for the rest of our vacation. We were all quite happy to get back home.
