Hello again! We're back at the airport this week with a second set of words to move you quickly and effortlessly through the gauntlet of immigration and customs. So shake off that jet lag and look sharp - the man in uniform is waiting!
HAVE READY 用意する
- To have something ready is to prepare it so that it can be used, presented, eaten, etc. as soon as it is needed.
- have something ready とは、必要になり次第、使ったり、提出したりできるように、または食べられるように、何かを準備しておく、という意味です。
- (officer to passengers waiting to go through immigration)
Please have your passports and boarding passes ready. Next in line, please. - (mother to her son who is going out to play)
I'll have dinner ready at 6:30. Be sure you're home by then. - Are you sure you're going to have everything ready in time? The party is tonight, and you haven't even started decorating.
- (boarding a bus)
PASSENGER: How much is the fare?
BUS DRIVER: $1.25.
PASSENGER: Do you have change for a ten?
BUS DRIVER: I can't make change, sir. You're supposed to have exact change ready before getting on the bus.
Have your wits ready again tomorrow, when we return with the Tuesday edition!
