2007.06.27(Review of 2003.06.25 edition)
Welcome to Wednesday and the latest edition of Berlitz WordMaster! Although there may be clouds in the sky, now that you're here, a brilliant sun is shining in our hearts! ... How's that for an enthusiastic greeting!
HEAVY / LIGHT (rain) 激しい雨/小雨
- When there is heavy rain or when it rains heavily or hard, a lot of rain falls in a short period of time.
When there is light rain or when it rains lightly, only a little rain falls.
Be Careful! “It's raining cats and dogs” is an interesting way to say “It's raining heavily”, but the expression is rarely used in actual conversation. - heavy rain または、 it rains heavily / hard と言うと、短時間にたくさん降る雨、つまり、激しい雨(が降る)、という意味です。
light rain または、it rains lightly は、小雨(が降る)、という意味です。
注意: It's raining cats and dogs. は、It's raining heavily. のちょっとおもしろい言い方ですが、この表現が実際の会話で使われることは、あまりありません。
- We've had some heavy rain in the past few days, so many of the roads are flooded.
- It's been raining heavily all day, and the kids are tired of staying inside.
- I don't think they'll stop the soccer match unless it really rains hard.
- (weatherman on TV news)
Expect light rain in the morning, with skies clearing by the afternoon. - a: Is it still raining?
b: Just lightly.
Our best wishes go with you wherever this day may take you!
