THE (FIRST) FLOOR
(1)階(アメリカ英語)、(2)階(イギリス英語)

Explanation

  • In American English, we call the floor at street level the first floor or the ground floor. The floor immediately above is the second floor, the next is the third floor, etc.

Be Careful! In British English, the floor at street level is always called the ground floor. The first floor is the floor immediately ABOVE the ground floor, the next is the second floor, etc.

UNITED STATES ENGLAND ... ... 3rd floor 2nd floor 2nd floor 1st floor 1st floor / ground floor ground floor
  • アメリカ英語では、地上階のことを the first floor または the ground floor と言います。そのすぐ上の階は the second floor (2階)、次の階は the third floor (3階)と続きます。

注意:イギリス英語では、地上階は、常に the ground floor と言います。the first floor は、the ground floor のすぐ上の階、つまり、2階のことです。次の階の3階は the second floor になります。

THE (FIRST) FLOOR

examples

  1. In many office buildings, space on the ground floor is reserved for shops and restaurants.
  2. (someone living in San Francisco)
I live on the first floor, so I never have to climb the stairs.
  3. In America, the top floor of a five-story building is the fifth floor, but in England it's the fourth floor. Confusing, isn't it?
