Explanation

  • To strike (verb) is (for a group of employees) to refuse to work until certain actions are taken by an employer (for example, increasing wages).

    A strike (noun) is an act of this kind.
  • strike(動詞)は、雇用主が特定の行動(例えば、賃上げなど)を取るまで、何人もの労働者が働くことを拒否する、という意味です。

    名詞形も strike で、そうした行為、つまり、ストライキのことです。

  1. Labor is threatening to strike unless working conditions are improved.
  2. The disgruntled employees are striking for higher wages and against proposed pension cuts.
  3. The government has ordered striking nurses to return to their jobs immediately.
  4. It's been three months since the machinists went on strike. If the strike goes on much longer, the airline says it may be forced to file for bankruptcy.
  5. (company spokesperson at press conference)
    We are very happy to announce an end to the strike after successfully reaching an agreement with labor representatives.
