Greetings, and welcome to June - a month when spirits and temperatures continue to rise and the days become longer than at any other time of the year!

This week, we'll take apart one of those long days and give each piece a name. By Friday, you should have an expression for any time of the day or night!

IN THE (MORNING/AFTERNOON/EVENING)

Explanation

  • In the morning usually means during the period from sunrise to noon, although it can also include the period from midnight to sunrise, as in “at 3 o'clock in the morning.”

    In the afternoon usually means during the period from noon to sunset.

    In the evening usually means during the period either from sunset to the time you go to bed or from late afternoon to the time you go to bed.
  • in the morning は、通常、日の出から正午までの時間をさしますが、at 3 o'clock in the morning(午前3時に)のように、深夜から日の出までの時間を含むこともあります。

    in the afternoon は、通常、正午から日没までの時間をさします。

    in the evening は、通常、日没から寝るまでの時間、または、午後の遅い時刻から寝るまでの時間をさします。

  1. I usually meditate for an hour after the kids leave for school in the morning.
  2. We all got up at 4 in the morning to see the meteor shower.
  3. I often have trouble getting work done in the afternoon because I get sleepy after lunch.
  4. Call me in the afternoon. I'll be in the office from 1 to 4.
  5. It cools off quickly in the evening after the sun goes down.
