It's not always easy to say no, so it's nice to know a few relatively polite ways of doing so. Here are two!
I'D RATHER (NOT/YOU DIDN'T).
どちらかといえばしたくない。/できればしてほしくない。
- I'd rather not means that you prefer NOT to do something.
I'd rather you didn't means that you prefer that the person NOT do something. - I'd rather not は、どちらかといえば何かをしたくない、という意味です。
I'd rather you didn't は、どちらかといえば、相手に何かをしてもらいたくない、という意味です。
- (salesperson to customer)
a: If you'd like to give us your e-mail address, we can put you on our mailing list.
b: I'd rather not. I get a little too much e-mail already. - (his daughter comes home from school looking upset)
a: What's the matter? Did something happen at school?
b: Sorry, but I'd rather not talk about it. - a: Do you mind if I smoke?
b: I'd rather you didn't. - I'd rather you didn't come to my first performance. I'd be too nervous with you there.
We'll be looking for you tomorrow!
