Hello!

Although the Japanese equivalent of today's expression makes perfect sense, most Americans won't have a clue what you're talking about. It's yet another example of what you might call Major League Japanglish.

Explanation

  • In baseball, a double play is when two runners become “out” after the ball is hit.

    Be Careful! The expression “get two” (ゲッツー) is Japanese-English and is NOT used to mean double play.
  • 野球で double play と言うと、ボールを打った後、2人のランナーがアウトになること、つまり、ダブルプレイ、ゲッツーのことです。

    注意: get two (ゲッツー)は、和製英語で、 double play の意味にはなりません。

examples

  1. The inning ended on a double play.
  2. They should have been able to make a double play, but the first baseman dropped the ball.
  3. Pitchers sometimes purposely walk strong hitters in order to set up a double play.
  4. We lost the game when Jimmy hit into a double play (= the other team made a double play after Jimmy hit the ball).
