2009.08.07(Review of 2003.10.17 edition)

We're back at the ballpark and things have heated up - way up!

(IMPORTANT!! The WordMaster will be giving his keyboard a rest next week for the Obon holiday. He'll return on Monday the 17th and hopes to see you then!)

Today's LessonCATEGORY: ジャパニーズイングリッシュ
(BASES) LOADED   満塁、フルベース

Explanation

  • The bases are loaded when there is a runner on every base.

Be Careful! The expression “full base” (フルベース) is Japanese-English and is NOT used to mean the bases are loaded.
  • The bases are loaded は、全ての塁にランナーがいる状態、つまり、満塁のことです。

注意: full base (フルベース)は和製英語で、 loaded の意味にはなりません。

(BASES) LOADED

examples

  1. The pitcher walked a batter while the bases were loaded, and a run was scored.
  2. A “grand slam” is when a batter hits a home run with the bases loaded.
  3. (baseball announcer)
It's the ninth inning, the bases are loaded, and “Take it to the Max” Berlitz is at bat. What a moment! It just doesn't get any more exciting than this!

英会話レッスンHit a home run next week, all right? In fact, make it a grand slam! In other words, have a terrific holiday - and we'll see you on the 17th!
