For Life
2009.12.17 (Review of 2001.12.14 edition)

You may not be familiar with today's song, but it's a fun one. It's about a little boy who's recently lost two front teeth, so that when he tries to say “Merry Christmas”, it sounds more like “Merry CHRITH-MITH”. Perhaps we could all take a lesson from this boy and keep our Christmas wishes small and practical!

Today's Lesson
ALL   唯一のこと

  • All I Want for Christmas (is My Two Front Teeth)by Donald Yetter Gardner
When all is used in expressions such as “all I want for Christmas” or “all we did”, it means “the only thing”.
  • all は、all I want for Christmas や all we did のように使われる場合、唯一のこと、という意味になります。

  1. a: Aren't you ready yet? We're going to be late.
b: All I need to do is put on some lipstick, then we can leave.
  2. All you do these days is watch TV and sleep. You need to get a life!
  3. We were out whale-watching for seven hours, but all we saw were seagulls and a couple of hungry seals.
  4. a: How did Andy's interview go?
b: I'm not sure. All I know is that he looked a little blue when he got home.
  5. You don't have to get me anything for Christmas this year. All I ask is that you promise to have dinner with me on Christmas Eve, okay?
