Explanation

  • A talk (noun) - as used in the expression “have a talk” - is a conversation.

    A talk - as used in the expression “give a talk” - is a speech or lecture.

    Talks (plural) - as used in the expression “hold talks” - are formal discussions between governments, companies, etc.
  • have a talk のように名詞として用いた場合、talk は、会話、という意味です。

    give a talk という表現の中で使われる場合、talk は、スピーチや講演をさします。

    hold talks のように複数形で用いた場合、talks は、政府や企業間の正式な話し合い、という意味になります。

  1. I had a talk with my staff this morning about the declining morale in the office.
  2. The first speaker is giving a talk on the rising cost of workers' compensation insurance.
  3. (to a speaker at a conference)
    I really enjoyed your talk.
  4. The union is scheduled to hold contract talks with the company next week.
  5. The heads of state (= presidents, prime ministers, etc.) for the three nations are attending peace talks in Geneva.
