- Something causes you to lose face if people respect you less because of it.
To save face is to avoid losing face. - lose face は、ある事が原因で、以前よりも敬意を払われなくなる、つまり、面目を失う、という意味です。
save face は、面目を失う事態を避ける、という意味です。
- If I miss another deadline, I'm really going to lose face with my supervisor.
- By delaying the start of the recall and risking lives in the process, the manufacturer lost face with the public.
- Soon after the scandal became headline news, five executives agreed to resign in order to save face for the company.
