Greetings!
When there's a lot riding on negotiations, the "action" in the conference room can be quite a rush. In fact, for some corporate thrill-seekers, action trumps money any day of the week.
If you like your business coursing with adrenaline, then you have a lot to look forward to this week. Let the games begin!
(HIGH/LOW) STAKES (大きな/小さな)賭け、賭け金
- The stakes in a business venture, negotiation, etc., are the money or other things of value to be gained if you succeed.
The stakes are high if a lot of money, etc., will be gained if you succeed. The stakes are low if relatively little will be gained. - stakes
- The outcome of this case has always been important to us, but now they've raised the stakes by making it a national media event.
- Jeff has been working 16-hour days preparing for the negotiations in Norway. He knows we're playing for high stakes this time.
- Test security is critical when administering a high-stakes test like the entrance exam for a prestigious university.
- I got my feet wet doing some low-stakes day trading. Then, when I'd developed more confidence, I started investing some real (= significant amounts of) money.
- Claire always does her best - even when it's for low stakes.
That was more exhilarating than bungee jumping!!
