Students often use the words expensive or cheap when they should use high or low. Just remember that expensive and cheap are used to talk about goods and services (e.g., an expensive watch, a cheap haircut). The words high and low are used to talk about how much money is needed to buy those goods and services, so use them with words like price, fare, rent, cost (n), etc.

皆さんは high/low という言葉を使わなければならない時、expensive/cheap を使いがちです。
expensive/cheap は、物やサービスについて使います。
high/low は、price(値段)、fare(料金)、rent(賃料)、cost(経費)などに使います。


1. a: This plane ticket was cheap.
   b: Yes, fares are really low recently.

2. a: Why is rice so expensive in Japan?
   b: Because the government keeps prices high.

3. a: I pay $900 a month for this apartment.
   b: Wow! Your rent is much higher than mine. You should move to a cheaper neighborhood.
