HOME>Word Master®>WILL BE (doing) -- using the future progressive for polite questions ~なさいますか ― 未来進行形(丁寧な疑問文)

It's nice to see you! How has your week been so far? We hope you're doing well today.

Here's your Wednesday WordMaster!

We often use the future progressive form, will be doing, when we want to soften a question and sound more polite.

For example, people in the service industry frequently use this form when asking customers questions. We also use this form to ask about someone's plans when the plans are related to something we want.

1.(calling a hotel)
a:I'd like to book a room.
b:How many nights will you be staying?

2.(a waiter to a customer)
a:Will you be having dessert today?
b:No thanks. I couldn't eat another bite.

3.a:Excuse me, but how much longer will you be needing the phone?
b:I'll be done in a minute. Sorry to keep you waiting.

4.a:Will you be seeing Professor Cruz this afternoon?
b:Yes, I have an appointment at 3:00.
a:Would you mind giving him this letter for me?
Thanks for coming!
