Explanation

  • We saw on Monday that box office is the booth at the theater where tickets are sold. But box office is also used in many expressions to talk about the money a movie makes. For example, to say that a movie was a box-office success means that it made a lot of money at the theater. 

    To say that a movie was a critical success means that it got good reviews.
  • 月曜日に取り上げた box office　 は、切符売り場という意味でしたが、この表現は、映画の興行収入について言うときにもよく使われます。例えば The movie was a box-office success .　は、映画の興行収入が多かった、という意味になります。

    The movie was a critical success .　は、評論家から高い評価を受けた映画、という意味です。

  1. "Gone with the Wind" and "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" were huge box- office successes in the 1930s.
  2. Premiere Magazine publishes movie box-office results every month.
  3. Studio Ghibli films always do well at the box office.
