There are so many different ways to borrow money that it's no wonder so many people are in debt. When you're really out of money, what's an option to consider?

Today's Lesson
PAWNBROKER (n.); PAWN SHOP (n.); PAWN (v.)

Explanation

  • A pawnbroker is a person with a shop who lends money. The shop he works in is called a pawn shop. Unlike a bank or a loan company, a pawnbroker will keep whatever you use as security (e.g., a camera, jewelry, or other expensive item) in his shop until you repay the loan. If you fail to repay the loan on time, the pawnbroker can sell your security in his shop. To pawn something means to deposit it as security in exchange for a loan from a pawnbroker.
