I started going regularly to PTA meetings at my son's school. I'm particularly interested in what's being taught in his class. I have personal reasons for wanting to know these details about his education.

Today's Lesson
VESTED INTEREST   利害関係、既得権益

Explanation

  • When you have a vested interest  in something, you're personally involved with it because you may benefit or get some enjoyment from it in the future.
  • vested interest  in something は、そこから利益を得ることができるという理由で、それに関わっている、という意味です。

examples

  1. I have a vested interest  in the stock market. That's why I read the financial section of the newspaper every day.
  2. (one assistant manger to another)
a: Why do you always go to those staff meetings? You always say they're so boring!
b: I go because I have a vested interest  in our company.
  3. The legislator refused to consider the proposal because he had no vested interest  in it.

Most company employees in Japan work long hours because they have  vested interests in their companies. If their companies do well, so do they!

Have a good week!
