Explanation

  • An offering is something (such as money, food, or incense) that is presented to a god to show respect.

    To make an offering is to give an offering to a god.
  • offering とは、金銭や食べ物、お香などのお供え物のことで、神仏に敬意を表すために捧げます。

    make an offering と言うと、神仏に供物を捧げる、という意味になります。

examples

  1. Sake is a common offering at shrines. You often see it in colorful barrels stacked one on top of the other.
  2. (at a shrine with an English friend who is new to Japan)
    Here's 100 yen. Throw it into the offering box, bow twice, clap your hands twice, and then you can pray for something like health, love, or success in school.
  3. We had to climb over 100 stairs to get to the temple building to make an offering.
