FIND vs. LOOK (FOR)   見つける vs. 探す

Explanation

  • To find something is to discover it.

    To look for something is to try to find it.
  • find は、何かを見つける、という意味です。

    look for は、何かを見つけようとする、つまり、探す、という意味です。

examples

  1. (in the ladies' department)
    a: May I help you find something?
    b: Yes, I'm looking for a one-piece swimsuit.
  2. I looked all day, but I just couldn't find a swimsuit I liked.
  3. (asking a passer-by for directions)
    a: Excuse me, I'm looking for the Berlitz Building. Do you know where it is?
    b: Yes, you'll find it on the next block, on your right.
  4. a: Can you help me look for my contact lens? It should be around here somewhere.
    b: Sure ... Ah! Here it is. I found it!
