Hello! What's “up”?
When talking about investments, distinguishing between up and down is everything. So here are a couple of fancy words that mean just that!
APPRECIATE / DEPRECIATE 価値が上がる/価値が下がる
- If a house or other asset appreciates, it increases in value.
If its value goes down, it depreciates. - 不動産などの資産の価値が上がることを appreciate といいます。
資産の価値が下がることを depreciate といいます。
- I bought a house for $150,000 ten years ago, and I just sold it for $250,000. It appreciated in value by $100,000!
- (a stockbroker to his client)
I know that this stock pays relatively low dividends, but the share price has been appreciating very rapidly. - (a British employee working in Japan)
I'm going to wait for the yen to appreciate a little more before I send my money home. - They say that a new car depreciates by about 30% the second you drive it off the lot.
- PCs depreciate very rapidly. You probably won't be able to sell your old one for very much.
Thanks for coming!
