2006.10.18(Review of 2004.01.27 edition)
Sometimes it's hard to know what a person is thinking, either because they haven't made their message clear or because they don't know themselves. Sure, this can be frustrating, but perhaps knowing what to call such a situation may make it a little easier to bear!
MIXED SIGNALS はっきりしないメッセージ
- To give or send mixed signals is to communicate (with words or actions) two different or opposite messages.
- give/send mixed signals は、(言葉や行動によって)異なった、あるいは反対のメッセージを送る、つまり、はっきりしないメッセージを与える、ということです。
- a: Do you think our customer in New Zealand will be ready to sign a contract soon?
b: I really don't know. We're getting very mixed signals from the company's representatives. - My boss has been giving me mixed signals about my job performance. He's always telling me what a great job I'm doing, but on my latest performance review he gave me my lowest score ever.
- Keiko keeps sending me mixed signals. Sometimes she's very friendly, but other times she doesn't even say hello.
We hope that clarifies things for you!
