As if we all don't have enough to be thankful for, along comes the Thursday WordMaster!
APPRECIATE / (BE) GRATEFUL
ありがたいと思う、感謝する(動詞)/感謝している(形容詞)
- To appreciate something or to BE grateful for it is to feel that you want to thank someone for it.
Be Careful! Appreciate is a verb. So we say, for example, “I appreciate it.” NOT “I'm appreciate it.” - appreciate や be grateful は、何かについて、誰かにお礼を言いたいと思う、つまり、感謝している、という意味です。
注意:appreciate は動詞です。ですから、“I'm appreciate it.” ではなく、“I appreciate it.” が正しい使い方です。
- Thanks. I appreciate it.
- (meeting with the principal of your child's school)
I really appreciate your time. I know how busy you must be. - We appreciate your coming on such short notice.
- (to a neighbor)
I'd appreciate it if you wouldn't practice trumpet in the middle of the night. - (to a customer who has lost his credit card)
a: We'll send you a new card right away.
b: Thank you. I'm grateful. - It's one of the top universities in the country. My daughter is so grateful for the chance to go there.
- I wasn't able to accept the invitation, but I was grateful to be asked.
- He's nearly 100 years old. He's just grateful that he still has his health.
- I'd be grateful if you could check my English for me. This is a really important letter.
Thanks for coming. We really ... you guessed it ... We really appreciate it!
