We realize that global warming is causing serious problems in many parts of the world, but that's easy to forget as the days grow colder with the change of season. And with the winter solstice just around the corner, the coldest is yet to come. So we're donning our overcoats this week and taking a walk through the world of ice and snow!

BELOW ZERO / BELOW FREEZING   零下/氷点下で(の)

Explanation

  • When using the centigrade temperature scale, below zero and below freezing both mean “less than zero (0) degrees”, the temperature at which water freezes.

    Be Careful! In the United States, below zero usually means “less than zero degrees FAHRENHEIT” (= less than -18 degrees centigrade).
  • 摂氏による温度の目盛りを使用している場合、below zerobelow freezing は、どちらも0度以下、という意味で、水が凍る温度をさします。

    注意:アメリカで below zero と言うと、華氏0度以下(つまり、摂氏マイナス18度以下)をさすのが普通です。
