Hello! We hope you greeted the spring in high style!
Today, we've got two more stylish greetings - just the thing to get you started off on the right foot when meeting someone new. They're both flattering as well as great conversation starters. After all, people love to hear all the good things others are saying about them!
(I'VE HEARD / ... HAS TOLD ME) A LOT ABOUT YOU.
おうわさはかねがね伺っております／～から、あなたのことを伺っています
- If you are meeting someone for the first time but already know many things about them, you can say I've heard a lot about you.
If you've heard a lot about someone from a particular person, you can say that the person has told me a lot about you.
Be Careful! If what you've heard about someone is negative, the above expressions may sound unkind and should not be used. - 初対面でも、すでにその人についてよく知っている場合、 I've heard a lot about you. と言います。
その人について、誰か特定の人から話を聞いている、という場合は、
... has told me a lot about you. と言うこともあります。
注意：知っていることがよくない評判の場合は、これらの表現は失礼にあたる可能性があるので、使うべきではありません。
- (meeting a friend of Veronica, a co-worker)
a: It's nice to finally meet you. I've heard a lot about you.
b: Oh, really?
a: Yes, Veronica is always saying good things about you. - (meeting a colleague from a branch office)
a: It's a pleasure to meet you. I've heard a lot about you.
b: (smiling) All good, I hope! (= I hope you've heard only good things about me.) - (meeting the wife of Paul, her supervisor)
a: Paul has told me a lot about you.
b: He's told me a lot about you as well. I heard that you grew up in Brazil ...
