Work is a serious activity such as a job, study (for school), etc., which requires effort and is intended to accomplish something.

Play - the opposite of work - is something you do because you enjoy it.
work とは、真剣に取り組む活動、例えば、仕事や（学校の）勉強など、努力を要し、何かを達成するために行うことです。

play は、work の反対で、自分が楽しむためにすることをさします。

WORK AND PLAY

I've always had trouble balancing work and play. I guess it's easy to get carried away when you love your work.
a: I've been spending so much time at the office these days, that I'm starting to feel burned out.
b: You really should take a vacation. You know what they say about “All work and no play.”**
I'm not very satisfied with the education my daughter is getting at her new high school. There seems to be a little too much play and not enough work.

a: What's the corporate culture like here?
b: It can be intense at times, but we don't mind mixing work with play once in a while to keep things fun.
** This refers to the well-known proverb “All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy,” which means that people who work too much tend to be less interesting than people who balance work and play.
