Hello again!
Everyone knows the famous sculpture at the Toshogu Shrine in Nikko of the three wise monkeys who “Hear no evil, speak no evil, see no evil.” Well, that may be a fine policy for monkeys and monks, but in the business world it's important to be aware of both the good AND the bad. So here's another bit of folk wisdom, WordMaster style!
KEEP YOUR EARS OPEN 注意して聞く、注意する
- To keep your ears open is to listen carefully FOR something.
- keep your ears open は、注意して何かを聞く、という意味です。
- a: Have you heard of any job openings in your company?
b: I haven't, but I'll keep my ears open. - (manager to assistant)
Staff morale seems awfully low these days, and I'd like to find out why. Could you keep your ears open for me? - I've been keeping my ears open for interesting news items to use in the newsletter.
And keep your EYES open for our next edition, coming your way tomorrow!
